Work911 Ezine - Less Frustration with Searches, New Interactivity (talk to us), Free Offers, Conflict Help, Social Media Con Game, Web Credibility

Dec 8, 2009 Our New Hybrid Search Engines Reduce Frustration,
Interactivity Allows You To Have Your Say and Get Help, Free Offers,
Conflict Help, The Social Media Con Game, and Credibility On The Web

We're back with a lot to tell you. Let's get to it.

Updates:

Want faster method to find great articles/resources on training,
learning, development, management, leadership, small business, web
design? Ah. We're building the tools at http://researchprofessional.org
.

We are building hybrid search engines to save time and frustration.
The idea is simple. The engines work like any search engine like
Google. You type in your keywords, and get results. The difference is
that you don't search the entire Internet, but only get results from
sites we have handpicked as relevant and junk/spam free. Here's an
example. Try entering the word "training" in any generic search
engine, and you will get results about dog training, toilet training,
running, work training, etc. Many of the results will be off topic for
you. In our training search engine, you will only get results about
training, as in that the process by which we can learn. No dogs, no
weight lifting training, no toilets.

Now the truth is that you can, by being really good with phrasing your
search, get similar results in the larger engines, but they don't
eliminate all the junk. We do (or we try). We're still early in the
process, but we now have functioning engines for:

training, learning, and development (including Organizational
Development)

leadership and management

small business

customer service

web design

All at http://researchdesign.org

There's more. You can help. Do you have a great site with loads of
articles and content that fits one of these categories? Or maybe you
don't have your own site but have your favorites? You can help us
include the best, and at the same time support the owner of the site
(s) by getting them more traffic and visitors.

Just go to http://researchdesign.org, and go to the relevant search
engine. At the bottom of each page you'll find a place to comment. Use
that to send us your submissions.

We're Lonely, Talk to Us. Talk To Each Other

Over the last years, you'll have noticed that websites have become
more interactive. While I do not believe that the majority of web
users actually want to interact all the time, I do see that having the
ability for visitors to talk to each other, ask questions, and comment
is useful and can be fun. So, we are interactifying our web sites.

Over the next six months you will see systems introduces to our web
pages so you can comment, ask questions, boo, hiss or communicate with
other visitors if you choose. The comment boxes will generally be
placed at the bottom of our pages, so if you aren't interested in
writing or reading, they won't interfere with the use of the pages.

Many of the pages on our Leadership Development Site at
http://work911.com/leadership-development/ now have these comment
boxes. So do our search engine portal at http://researchprofessional.
org , and our site on training, learning and development at
http://thetrainingworld.com

Eventually all our sites will be equipped with two new features: Our
hybrid niche search engines, and our comment system.

The Myth of Multitasking: How 'Doing It All' Gets Nothing Done - Free
Book Summary:

In this summary you will learn:

* Why the idea that multitasking works is misleading *

How to deal with constant, active or passive interruptions at work *

How to use your time productively without "switchtasking"

Why you should read The Myth of Multitasking

Dave Crenshaw has managed to stretch a clear, simple concept into an
entire book, but it is a useful, helpful concept. Crenshaw debunks the
myth that multitasking can be effective and advocates focusing on one
task at a time instead. He teaches this lesson by telling the story of
a gifted business coach, Phil, and his stressed-out client, Helen. He
uses the format of a business novel to demonstrate that multitasking
is not an efficient way to get things done. Every time a person
changes from one task to another, which Crenshaw calls
"switchtasking," he or she loses time and focus. The remedy, the
author explains, is to cut down on interruptions, manage how you
allocate your time and concentrate on a single task at a time. This is
not exactly a groundbreaking theory in time management, but it is
certainly a helpful reminder. getAbstract suggests this book to
managers who must help employees handle their time and to people who
need guidance to quit multitasking so they can actually get things
done. About the Author Dave Crenshaw has coached business executives
for the past decade. A frequent keynote speaker, he founded the Fresh
Juice Strategy program. http://work911.tradepub.com/free/w_geta17/prgm.cgi

The Art of Engagement: Bridging the Gap Between People and
Possibilities - Free Book Summary: http://work911.tradepub.com/free/w_geta18/prgm.cgi

In this summary you will learn:

* Why your organization's new strategy will fail if your employees are
not engaged with it * What six obstacles impede employee engagement

* What are the six best ways to engage employees *

Why "strategic engagement" is a process, not a series of separate,
stand-alone actions

Why you should read The Art of Engagement

Organizational leaders spend considerable time and effort carefully
developing strategies to advance their corporate goals. However, they
often fail to communicate these strategies compellingly to their
employees – the people who must execute every step. Therefore, it is
no surprise that most such strategies fail. Management consultant Jim
Haudan recommends a strategy-sharing approach using visuals, metaphors
and stories to engage employees. He offers tactics for getting them on
board to execute your strategy and organizational directives. One
negative: Many of the illustrations (reductions from original table-
size artwork) are busy and even fuzzy. Some feature tiny text, which
illustrates – in the breech – Haudan's point about using clear visuals
to communicate and engage. Otherwise the book is superior, very
insightful and nicely written. Haudan uses case studies to demonstrate
the effectiveness of his employee engagement process. getAbstract
believes leaders can benefit from learning his tactics for
communicating strategies so employees understand them, support them
and actually implement them. http://work911.tradepub.com/free/w_geta18/prgm.cgi

Feature: CREDIBILITY THE Issue In Online Research

We're out of time, but here's a feature article by Robert Bacal on an
issue that faces all of us. WHO to believe on the Internet. This
question relates to what we buy, who we trust, even wider issues such
as democracy and education, and it's going to be critical for the next
generations. This article is just the start of our discussions. Don't
be fooled by the title. It IS about you, me, and our children!

It's also available at http://researchprofessional.org/articles/credibilityoverview.htm
Don't forget to read the comments and add yours.

Credibility - THE Issue In Online Research

by Robert Bacal

These days everyone uses the Internet for "research" either
informally, as in looking for a restaurant to try, or more formally,
as in collecting information for inclusion in an academic paper. For
ALL of us, there is a central, compelling, and urgent issue - who to
believe.

Background

As the Internet (and the Web) have become popularized, not just for
reading, but also for participating and expressing one's own opinions,
the issue of credibility has become more and more critical for
everyone. Why has it become even more of a concern now compared to,
let's say, ten years ago? Here are some points:

The barriers to entry for self-expression are virtually zero. A blog
can be set up by anyone with a computer, free of charge, making it
possible for everyone to express an opinion.

Since there are no barriers to entry into having a public platform,
and there are no "editors" per se, the majority of websites in
existence today have NO editorial oversight and no fact checking. Even
for people who sincerely want to be accurate, it's difficult to get
everything right all the time. There's no checks or balances, unlike
the traditional paper based publishing industries, where editors, fact
checkers, even lawyers, are involved PRIOR to publication.

Anyone can pass him or herself off as having any qualifications,
education, or experience. This results in outright lying, in a worst
case, to more commonly occurring exaggerations such as you might find
on resumes. They aren't quite outright lies but they portray the
individual positively, so credibility is enhanced.

The proliferation of blogs, which were originally intended as personal
modes of expression, much like "diaries" or "journals" have evolved
into much more, but authors have NOT become more diligent or
responsible in checking the information and facts they include. That
is, blogs are less about "here's my day" or having a good old rant,
than they are about presenting information. However, personal
responsibility has not evolved.

With the advent of social media, and "viral communication" bad
information, factually incorrect material, and plain nonsense are
picked up and repeated over and over until they quickly become
unacknowledged "urban myths". Only people don't realize it. After all,
when you see a piece of information re-posted, re-tweeted, etc 100's
of times, there's a natural tendency to believe the content has merit.
In fact, hundreds of people reposting from the same source, are often
wrong because the original source is wrong, on the Internet, and
inaccurate information can spread in minutes or hours.

Take a look at these paragraphs. Are they mostly facts, mostly
opinion, or mostly interpretation? Should you believe what's been
written? Think about how you could verify the content? And, if you
were writing an advanced paper on web credibility, would you use this,
and provide a citation?

The propensity for people to repeat misinformation on the net is
highly influences by a set of logical errors people tend to make when
reading and interpreting any material. These error seem to be more
prevalent online, where people don't "read" in the same way people
read printed matter. We know from eye scan studies, that most people
scan webpages, and unfortunately, they often misunderstand what they
have scanned, almost completely. Most people have probably seen cases
where people, having read an article with evidence that supports a
particular position, end up reposting their summaries as if the
article's evidence refutes the position.

Further to the issue of logical errors, basic mistakes when reading
and then reposting involve confusing opinion and fact (as presented in
web reading material), and confusing interpretation and fact. The
latter is so prevalent, even on the part of very educated
professionals, that it may be the norm. Readers get "stupider" on the
Internet!

Finally, blogs and the other forms of social media almost always
consist of SHORT text. Posts on blogs (note that they are called
posts, not articles to reflect that they have more in common with
brief email communication) tend to run about 250- 300 words. It's
exceedingly rare for posts and even web articles nowadays to run
beyond five hundred words.

In itself that is not a major problem, except that given limited
writing skills on the part of many bloggers, lack of editing, and
readers' tendencies to skim even short posts rather than read, the
chances of MISUNDERSTANDING the writer's intent is huge. Then, the
readers, having misread or not really read the post, virally tell
others about its meaning it is worse than the old game of broken
telephone. The message gets garbled and twisted, and repeated. Also,
many subjects simply cannot be written out coherently in limited
space. At least, not so misunderstandings are minimized.

Finally, there is the issue of reputation. It's easy to make the
mistake of assuming someone who is often talked about (retweeted, for
example), or has many visitors to his or her blog, actually knows what
he or she is talking about. In fact, those with the most "influence"
due to their "popularity" are not necessarily achieving this through
being erudite, knowledgable, or smart. The "influence" and popularity
you see, particularly with respect to social media participation,
comes from committing a lot of time to social media. It has very
little to do with insight, or ability or accuracy.

It's pretty simple. If you work the crowd, participate all over the
place, you WILL gain a following simply on the basis of doing that.

The flip side is that many people who would otherwise be able to
refute much of the nonsense a) have better things to do than spend
hours every day on Linkedin or Twitter, and b) don't have the fans
that the marketers and others who spend huge parts of their day
linking and tweeting, and whatever all they do. Hence, a lot of the
nonsense goes unchallenged, because frankly, people equate popular
with accurate.

So?

What does all this amount to? Well, it means that researching on the
Internet requires a much more sophisticated set of skills and
understanding then in the old days, when research happened in
libraries, and kids did their homework with the home encyclopedia.

In our future articles we'll look at some of the skills and knowledge,
and hopefully, help you develop better abilities to assess credibility
in addition to using search and research tools productively.

WORK911 Ezine - What's New, Ready For Holidays, Fighting Fair, Gift Ideas For Information Junkies, Huge Announcement About New Search Engines For Training, Development, Learning, Management, Leadership, Webdesign, Freebies

Nov. 20, 2009 What's New, Ready For Holidays, Fighting Fair, Gift
Ideas For Information Junkies, Huge Announcement About New Search
Engines For Training, Development, Learning, Management, Leadership,
Webdesign, Freebies.

We focus on the upcoming holidays, preparing for and dealing with
holiday conflict, share with you a new project that will really help
you find QUALITY, NO SPAM NO JUNK websites and content, and quite a
bit more. Let's get going.

Holidays Coming: Are You Prepared For The Interpersonal Challenges?

It's that time again. Holidays are coming in a number of countries and
faiths, and that means families getting together, and (theoretically)
enjoying each others' company. Except family togetherness often brings
out various dynamics that tend to increase the potential for conflict
and hurt feelings. The pressure of preparing for holidays doesn't help
either, and anyone spending time in shopping malls this time of year
will understand. Work and economic concerns are also making people
tense and volatile.

NOW is the time to start honing your skills regarding how you deal
with conflict, because it's almost inevitable they will be needed over
the next few months. We have some tools for you

First up is something for the entire family: Our Learning To Fight
Fair Helpcard. NOW is an ideal time to purchase your copy (it's just
about $10) and share it with your family, or even use it to construct
some rules to apply for the holiday season on how to act when there
are disagreements. Check out our page at: http://busylearners.com/products/i-cfightfair.htm
for more information, and buy it now because if you wait until just
before holidays to get your spouse and kids onboard, it will be too
late.

If you want to be able to have the family argue or disagree without
hurting each other, and so the fallout doesn't extend on and on, get
this learning tool. You are worth it. So are your loved ones. Have a
better holiday season.

Next up is Using Your Head To Manage Conflict Helpcard. When conflict
occurs, or begins, at work or at home, people tend to REACT to it
automatically in their preferred style, and don't think through their
reactions to choose what fits the situation. One thing we know about
conflict is that HOW you choose to behave will determine if things
work out well, or poison relationships. Another is that the more you
think and choose the best solution for the situation, the better off
you will be.

Using Your Head to Manage Conflict Helpcard explains your options. For
example, some potential conflicts truly deserve to be totally ignored,
while others may require strong, even aggressive actions. Other
situations need a light cooperative hand. We teach you when to use
what techniques, and that's invaluable. For just about $11, it's a
steal. http://busylearners.com/products/i-cconhead.htm

PS. Buy both of these helpcards at the same time and you get a
discount. Available in immediate downloadable versions, OR, in

FEATURED ARTICLE: DEALING WITH HOSTILE BAIT

Another aspect of dealing with conflict, or verbal barbs, subtle or
otherwise has to do with dealing with the "bait". Ok. The bait isn't
worms, or anything like that, but the idea is this: If you "bite" into
the verbal bait, then it tastes bad and you get hooked into a
conversation that usually goes downhill and escalates.

In this Robert Bacal article from the archives, he provides some
methods to deal with the bait, taken from his book Defusing Hostile
Customers Workbook. http://busylearners.com/products/i-defuse.htm

They are applicable to many other situations, but with the holidays
coming, those of you who deal with customers may want to look
carefully at this.

Dealing With Hostile "Bait" by Robert Bacal

When dealing with verbal abuse or hostility from clients, it is
important to be able to avoid responding to the "bait" that is placed
before you. Not only is that important, but it is also important to
know exactly what you can say, when you are subject to attacks like:

"If you really cared about my welfare, you would give me my check!"

"You guys in government are lazy and over-paid."

"I bet if I wasn't [ethnic group], you would give me...."

In this On The Line, we will help you deal with these kinds of
remarks.

Some Background

In order to deal with these kinds of attacks there are a few things
that you need to understand.

Verbal attacks follow certain patterns, and have some hidden
rules. The attacker expects you to react in particular ways. Usually a
verbal attacker will expect that you will become either defensive and
intimidated, or that you will become aggressive and attack
back. Unfortunately, when you do what the attacker suggests, you give
control to him or her, and increase the probability that the attack
will continue. So, the best way to stop an attack is not to take
either of these actions.

In addition, verbal attacks tend to "run off" by themselves, in an
almost automatic manner. So long as you do what is expected, the
attacker is able to continue. So, you need to do something unexpected
to stop the attack.

Also, verbal attacks contain bait. Just like the fisherman, the
attacker presents you with bait in the hope that you will swallow it
and be hooked. Bait is often unsaid, or pre-supposed. What this means
is that the attacker need not attack you directly, but need only imply
certain things, without really saying anything. Let's take an
example.

In the attack sentence "If I wasn't [ethnic group], I bet you would
give me....". If you look carefully, you won't find the insult in the
words. Still, most people will react to the hidden bait...the implied
suggestion of racism. It is important to be able to identify the
hidden attack, so you can understand, and resist the attacker's effort
to manipulate you.

Self-Defense Tactics

Dealing with these kinds of attacks can be complex, but we can suggest
a few options that are likely to disrupt the attack.

1. The Disrupting Question

The general principle underlying this technique is that you want to do
something somewhat unexpected, while at the same time, acknowledging
the implied insult. It is important not to defend and not to be too
passive.

The disrupting question follows the following form:

When did you start thinking that....?

where the end of the question relates to the unspoken insult or
attack. For example, faced with the attack implying racism, disrupting
questions might be:

When did you start thinking that we allow your ethnic background to
influence our behaviour?

When did you start thinking that I am discriminating against you?

Both of these questions are likely to cause the attacker to become a
bit confused and have to stop the attack so that he or she can figure
out what to say next. This kind of response brings control back to
you. In addition, these questions acknowledge, and respond to the
issue brought up by the customer in a polite way.

2. Computer Mode

An attacker will often expect you to respond using an "I" statement
(eg. I'm not racist), or a "You" statement (eg. "You can't talk to me
that way").

You have a third option, that involves doing the unexpected. This
option involves using what we call "computer mode" because it is
somewhat detached, and removes the personalization from the attack. It
does not involve I or You statements.

Some forms to remember include:

"It's interesting that some people think that [their ethnic background
affects the way they are treated]."

"A good many people think that [government employees are over-paid]"

Note again that these responses will be unexpected by the attacker,
and while they show that you heard the attack, they do not imply that
you agree, or that your are defending or attacking.

Conclusion:

We have described two simple verbal responses to verbal attacks that
tend to interrupt the attack cycle. Of course, there are other
techniques that can be used, and it is important to realize that any
attack defusing techniques must be applied with care and good
judgement, since every situation is different. These techniques,
coupled with others, can result in increasing your ability to deal
with the hostile bait.

Looking for Christmas Gifts For Information Junkies?

Some of my favorite things:

Audiobooks: I'm an audiobook junkie. They are great if you don't like
television, and you like to relax with your eyes closed or easily get
tired eyes, and quality these days is excellent. The leading supplier
of audiobooks in the world is audible, and they often have discounts.
Their system is efficient because you download the material and it's
playable on most players, including, of course the Ipod line and
Iphone. Great gifts, for others or yourself, AND there's a good supply
of fiction and non-fiction. Great for driving, flying, making use of
time otherwise wasted. Here's one of their offers:

Download an audiobook for $7.49 and save 50% for your first 3 months.
Choose from over 60,000 titles.

If the link above doesn't work just go to http://www.jdoqocy.com/pi105zw41w3JLOOSKLLJLKOKKOMK

In the same topic area is audio book summaries. It's impossible to

You the Job! - Free Book Summary:

In this summary you will learn:

* What prospective employers will ask you

* What you should answer and ask in return

* How to avoid common job interview mistakes

WORK911 Ezine - Free offers, what's new, book summaries, and from a distance everyone looks ????

Oct. 26, 2009 What's new, free stuff, fighting fair, and from a
distance everyone is ???

First, a brief note:We've decided to use shortened links to ensure
that you can get to the pages we refer to in the newsletter. The links
just redirect and are perfectly safe. What this does is that we can
direct you to sites that have hugely long net addresses, and it will
always work, no matter how you view the newsletter.

Interested in Small Business?

We have restarted developing our website for owners and prospective
owners of small businesses. It's timely since you may know that it is
small business that is leading the economic recovery, that it's small
business that is helping to control at least some of the unemployment
levels, and a fair number of people who have lost their jobs in large
companies have started their own businesses. Our site, the Small
Business Resource Center offers links to important material on various
aspects of starting or running your small business.
http://smallbusiness411.org/index.shtml We add material at least
weekly.

While you are there, consider buying our newest book, published by
McGraw-Hill, entitled Perfect Phrases For Managing Your Small
Business. It's a bit misnamed, because it isn't about just the things
you say, but will help you with all kinds of small business issues,
from deciding if starting a small business is for you right through to
marketing and more. We are very pleased with the content of this book
and at under $10 U.S. it's an amazing resource. Better yet, get it
right now, if you are even considering starting a small business, or
you are a vet. Grab a copy from amazon at http://bit.ly/Dgnwq .

Also related to this book is that we are adding articles based on or
reproducing sections of the book on our small business site in the
form of frequently asked questions and answers. It's a little bare but
adding stuff every day almost. http://smallbusiness411.org/faq/

Let's Get To The Free Stuff

Lots of neat stuff. First up, three free magazine subscription offers,
and there's no catch. You don't have to use your credit card and there
is none of this "you have to cancel or we will start charging you"
stuff. Well, wait, they will only give out subscriptions to qualified
professionals in the appropriate fields, and you have to be in the
USA.

First, there's TECH & LEARNING Magazine, which is the leading magazine
for those involved in the application of technology to learning and
education. Here's the description and to subscribe go to
http://work911.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc:&pc=tnl

For almost 30 years, Tech & Learning has served the K-12 education
community with cutting-edge news, practical resources and expert
strategies for transforming education through integration of digital
technologies. No other resource helps educators get up to speed with
the emerging technologies and products in order to best prepare
students for the global digital workforce.

Next is the leading magazine for website developers and owners:
WEBSITE MAGAZINE. Until now, there has not been a magazine that caters
exclusively to the business of running a website. Website Magazine has
tapped premier talent in the Internet industry for our content and
each and every issue will contain practical advice and insights for
website owners.

Get your free no-strings subscription at:
http://work911.tradepub.com/c/pubRD.mpl?sr=oc&_t=oc:&pc=webs

The final candidate in the free mag. subscriptions category is: SFO -
(STOCKS, FUTURES AND OPTIONS Magazine) and is to help investors, and
stock market players increase their understanding and their profits.
The magazine is a place for active traders to find consistently useful
and cutting-edge articles on markets, trading strategies and technical
methods, as well as economic and regulatory issues. The focus on
global and national news, commentary and methodologies in both
equities and derivatives markets offers information readers can use to
shape their personal investing styles and make the most of market
opportunities. The content within the high-quality pages of SFO can't
be found anywhere else. http://work911.tradepub.com/free/sfo/

There is NO limit on the number of offers you can apply for.

Free Whitepapers, etc.

Here are more free, no strings offers. In case you are wondering why
these are available, it's simple. Whitepaper publishers provide
informative material in the hope that you will become interested in
their products or services. Usually there's no real "sell", but they
want your eyeballs. It's a way that they can put their brand name in
front of qualified readers. I've downloaded a lot of these offers, and
honestly, I don't recall getting hardly any followup mail or calls.

One of the coolest categories of stuff is book summaries. I don't know
about you, but there are so many books I'd like to read, but I simply
don't have the time or energy to read everything I would like. Books
summaries/abstracts are one way to get around this, since they are
short readable summaries where you can learn and absorb the essence of
the original books. Are they as good as reading the books? You decide,
but as a writer, and a reader, I do sometimes wonder at how authors
spend 250 pages explaining a five page idea <grin>. Here are the ones
currently available plus links.

http://work911.tradepub.com/ you will find HUNDREDS of free trade
publication offers for webinars, trade magazines (e.g. Profit
Magazine), whitepapers and even free e-books (eg. 66 page ebook on
project management). We can't possibly do justice to all of them so
check them out yourself. Offers change regularly, almost daily, so
check back. I can personally vouch for the company and the integrity
of the endeavor. Again, a reminder that there is no limit for
publications you can apply for.

Learning To Fight Fair - Don't risk the relationships of those you
care about.

There's disagreement and arguments in any relationships, betwwen
spouses, between parents and children, between coworkers, and what
determines the effects on the relationships is NOT who wins, but how
each person "fights". The truth is we aren't taught to fight so that
we make our case assertively without hurting the other person, and as
the saying goes, we do always hurt the ones we love.

It's all about HOW we fight. Fighting fair refers to the use of ways
of arguing that do not result in the hurting of the other person. By
following simple guidelines and principles you can stop inflicting
emotional distress on others when you disagree, and then you are more
likely to be respected and cared for by the people who are important
to you.

We've set forth these principles and even the phrases you should
avoid, and what you can replace them with, in our easy to use "Learn
To Fight Fair Helpcard". Get a copy for yourself, so you can make sure
you don't accidentally use words to hurt someone you care about. Get a
copy for each of the members of your family, even. It's a great
discussion resource for the whole family, and the whole family can
learn how to treat each other respectfully, even in the midst of
anger. It could save a marriage. Or a mother and daughter
relationship. Or, even a relationship in the workplace.

It's so low cost - current price is $9.95 for the downloaded version
and $12.95 for the printed and laminated one that there is no excuse
not to learn to fight fair. What price can you put on your
relationships? Get your copies at: http://busylearners.com/products/i-cfightfair.htm

Oh, one more thing. We all know the holiday season in December is
often fraught with tension, and sometimes arguments increase. The time
is NOW to start working on fighting fair, since, while it takes only
30 minutes to read our helpcard, it may take you weeks to practice and
get into the habit of fighting fair!

Let me leave you with a short piece from my Bacal's Laws series.

Bacal's Laws: From 20 Feet Away Everyone Seems Normal http://bit.ly/2gMJet

This is a deceptively simple concept that affects much of our lives.
It explains that from a distance, or with people we don't know well
(and we may not know many people well) everyone seems psychologically
intact, or "normal".

Until you know people well, they will not tend to display their
abnormalities, or neuroses.

Well, ya, it's kind of obvious. But we forget. We tend to think that
others are better off than we are, because a) we have access to our
own inner turmoil, and b) we do NOT have access to the internal
emotional turmoil of others.

Here's a Practical Implication

When I used to train teachers, instructors and public speakers, my
"students" often worried about their nerves and that the audience
would know how terrified they were. They would do practice sessions,
and STILL believe that the audience noticed their terror. And, they
believed that the other students were quite calm when they practiced.

The reason was, as above, the students accessed their own internal
fears, while not being able to access the fears of others. The result
was an impediment to learning.

Interestingly enough, I was able to teach them to get past the idea
that the audience would sense their terror, by doing a video playback
of their practice, coupled with some careful questioning. When I
played the segments back, I asked the student to point out the parts
that gave away nervousness. Often the could not.

Coupled with an explanation of: From 20 feet away everyone seems
normal, they were able to realize that, for the most part, they all
shared some nervousness pretty equally, and that the audience never
knew.

Or as the rabbi said to me as a 13 year old. "Son, if you forget the
words, or the tune just keep going because nobody but you and I are
going to know, and I'm not telling." Oy vey.

Special Feature:

Why Technology Never Has The Expected Positive Impact on Learning and
Teaching

This article is also available online at: http://bit.ly/oUbOR along
with a number of user comments. Please feel free to add yours. Also,
there are some other interesting and related issues regarding
technology, such as its inability to actually solve human problems,
and its relative ineffectiveness in increasing productivity,
particular for white collar jobs. Enjoy.

One thing that happens as you age, and provided you've been paying
attention, is that patterns seem to emerge. You hear some people
talking, and you can quickly determine what is going on, hostile,
friendly, business, personal, whatever, from the patterns exhibited.
Many things start to look familiar.

And you get the feeling you've seen most things before. Because you
have.

That's why it's so interesting to see the claims, hopes, even demands
made by those in the business of peddling learning and training
solutions that are technologically, rather than humanly based. Or the
similar claims and demands made by converts to the newest faith based
"movements" like social learning and e-learning.

"A powerful force—unlike any in history—is altering the learning
profession's landscape", Tony Bingham, President of ASTD says. "You
will become irrelevant", another learning professional expounds. "Your
business will disappear", yet another pundit screams. Yet, it all
seems so familiar.

Now, it's true that there have been technological innovations that
HAVE had profound effects on how people live, and society in general,
going from movable type, telegraph and telephone, television,
mainframe computers, personal computers, inter-connectivity, and the
Internet. Oddly enough, though only ONE of these (the Gutenberg Press)
has had an appreciable revolutionary impact on how people learn.

Television, telephone, mainframes, pc's etc were all touted as
revolutionary in terms of how they would change the education system,
and the learning process. I can personally remember the claims
regarding television when I was in elementary school, and the claims
for computer assisted instruction on mainframes and so on. And, the
hopes for the personal computer. I was "there" for the latter two.

Our school district bought dozens of expensive TV's, ultimately used
once or twice a year (the walk on the moon was one time). Schools went
out and bought APPLE II's, which promptly ended up gathering dust,
useless. Computer assisted instruction, by and large didn't go very
far.

Despite all the claims, the "buzz" (it wasn't called that then), the
investment of huge amounts of resources, NONE of these revolutionized
learning. And I'll let you in on a secret. The newest technologies
aren't going to either (but see the exception at the end). Why?

There are several reasons. One has to do with people as human beings.
The other has to do with systems. The first is the more profound and
immutable. The second can be addressed.

First, while proponents of "social learning" have taken the term and
bastardized it, there's a kernel of value to the term. In essence ALL
learning is social. Knowledge is a social construction and often the
effectiveness of lack in terms of what someone learns is determined in
the context of interacting with other people. If knowledge is social,
and validation of learning is social, then ultimately, learning is
also social.

Most important is that generally, learning works best when it involves
interactions of real human beings in real time. That's the best way to
get in depth learning happening, and it's a major rational reason why
the ancient model of one person telling (stories) to many, then
interacting with them, has been with us for thousands of years. That's
not to say that it is perfect. It's not. But humans, quite simply,
like to learn in relatively "high touch" circumstances. That is, they
like to learn from humans with humans, and the interactions enables
more learning of different types.

Clearly, learning by reading a book is not the same as sitting with
the author for the same length of time. It's simply different. In
exactly the same way interacting with a machine to learn is not the
same as talking with someone directly.

One mistake techno's make is believing that interactions via
technology will be equal to, the same, or be able to replace live,
face to face interaction in real time.

The clear error made over and over is that given content to be
learned, any medium can be used to get the identical results, but
newer media are more effective and preferred by learners.

It's not so. What happens is that any medium that is made more
"efficient" by the elimination of real time human interaction and
contact unmediated by machines, will be perceived as unpleasant,
boring, uninspiring by most learners, particularly over time. Can you
imagine watching television for learning, 7 hours a day? Or sitting at
a computer for that period of time? Or even reading? Every day?

Of course not. The human contact makes it work. It allows questions.
You can test your learning with a real human being who can help, or
congratulate, make you feel good, (or bad). Not even "real time"
machine mediated interactions can do that. YES, technology can help.
But it will never yield the positive impact on learning and teaching
that is claimed, because it cannot replace humans in the learning
process. Sadly, often disappointment when the claims and expected
impacts do not occur results in the shelving of the whole technology
even if it would have some value.

Ultimately it's the LEARNERS who say: NO. They said no to learning by
watching television, NO to programmed instruction, NO to language labs
with tape recorders, NO to computer mediated instruction (unless you
forced them) NO to interactive video discs, and they will continue to
go back to human interactions for learning, formal or otherwise.

We are social. There is no dispute over that in the scientific
community. Social does NOT mean connecting via machines. It means
connecting IN PERSON. It means high touch. This will not change, at
least in the near future.

Systems Issues

Systems issues are a bit different. We learn within, and educate
within structures that have evolved for practical reasons, rather than
in ways that maximized learning for each individual. It's a tough
thing, really. The bottom line is our systems are created with a
certain mind set about learning, into which technological solutions do
not fit well.

Technology gets "stuck on" like a band aid" rather than integrated
into a learning system that works seamlessly.

We have many questions about study and learning that takes place
outside the institutions we have. We need to certify and protect and
fulfil other social obligations, and that creates integration issues
with individually based technology based learning. In any event, it is
theoretically possible the world's systems will evolve to allow for
intelligent technological use that works. But there are many barriers.

Exceptions

There will be some exceptions. If and when we can create virtual
worlds and simulations that are, in effect indistinguishable from real
face to face interaction, we will be as close as we can get (without
implanted electrodes and DNA/RNA stuff) to superior technologically
based learning. Of course, that'd be pretty freaky. Clearly that would
alter the world, and how learning occurs.

Would it replace the desire and need for face 2 face interaction in
the real world? Maybe. Maybe not. Probably not. Got to keep an open
mind.

We Have To Do A Little Business.

I have a suspicion that the more one relies on technology, the more
one tends to become a servant of technology. It seems I've spent the
majority of my work time the last while struggling with programs that
crash, computers that misbehave, webservers that break, and on and on.
But the final straw is that in a space of a few days, two essential
tools for my life bit the dust. First, my GPS, which I absolutely rely
upon for driving directions, developed a cracked face after only 11
months. And, then my Ipod Classic locked up and died. So, the upshot
is we need to make money to pay for these "essentials" (Who am I
kidding here? Probably no one)

Ok. You know, we actually sell things. Well, there's a book on
defusing hostile customers, and one on preventing unnecessary
conflict, and then there's are unique series of helpcards.

People tell me I should write this high pressure, BS type sales hype,
and I just can't. So, if you are looking to increase your ability to
delegate, or communicate or present to tough groups, or to do
performance appraisals, the scoot over to http://busylearners.com and
browse. Buy something.

Oh, and when you get to http://busylearners.com, the first time, you
will see (at the top) the discount that will be applicable to your
entire order. Everyone will get one who pays attention, and they range
from 20% to 50% off your order. There's the usual, we reserve the
right to limit quantities and that kind of thing.

Before We Go: Reprise

Make Money Online Guaranteed

You too can make money online guaranteed, which will be nice in the long term. You need to make sure that you're making a wealth of income if you're going to ditch the nine to five world and get into the greatness that is out there. Seriously, consider how to make money online guaranteed and you'll be on your way to making a few insider moves that only smartened individuals end up making. If you're not going to make yourself move forward, than at least let someone talk to you about the future that is out there. No, not some random marketing jargon that is going to leave you with misrepresented time lines or emotional congruency that is nothing more than ill fated attempts at making your life new and stable. These things aren't going to just pop up and hit you in the face, so why not try to find something new and see what might be out there.

Yes there is a great amount of knowledge out there if you're willing to just open your hands, receive it and digest it. If you're not careful you might end up falling for anything that is out there, and that's the hard part about making an income online. Do not simply believe those that say you can make money online guaranteed, because that's not going to win you their trust. You need to make sure that there is more than life out there, and that life out there requires you to brave, not stupid.

So if someone out there is going to promise you a greater good, make sure that when thy tell you that there is a way to make money online guaranteed, you do your homework and ask a few questions. If you ask enough of the right questions you get to the bulk of anyone's ideas and that's the important thing about life in general. Knowing what you're getting yourself into is point number one, following through on what information you have been offered is point number two.

If you follow the steps that are outlined by many people that say you an make money online guaranteed than you are in good graces because there is grand hope for you yet. However, if you deviate from the plan of attack that is out there, you might end up losing the world around you in the pursuit of fast riches. These fast riches are not going to last you forever, and you need to realize that before you give up your time and money to a plan that may not work for you. Everyone has the capacity to make an interesting amount of financial gains, but it really depends on whether or not you're willing to not only step it up a notch, but also follow through on the other side. The follow through is key here and is something that you're not going to regret any time soon, that's the glorious world of the internet. If you're at least a little bit diligent, you're going to gain huge success, and that's a great thing overall.

Work911 Ezine - Updates, New Free Stuff, Newsletter Changes, Articles

July 24, 2009 Updates, New Free Stuff, Some Newsletter Changes

It's pretty amazing how fast things move when you get older. I keep
promising to do these newsletters much more frequently, and
then...well, I don't. But here we are and hoping you are having a safe
Summer (or season of you choice). In this issue we have a number of
updates, and then some information on what's new and interesting on
our websites.

The Big News: Free2Thee.com

Those of you who have been with us for a long time know that we (as in
my company, Bacal & Associates) has been hunting down and making
available the best freely available articles on the web through our
various subject specific sites (e.g. conflict911.com, performance-
appraisals.org, smallbusiness411.org, and others). For the most part
the evolution of the net suggested that we spend less time on those
types of resources and more effort on tracking down free ebooks,
ecourses, whitepapers, audiobooks and/or anything substantial that
will help you, our visitor, learn.

The result is http://free2thee.com, a site that contains summaries and
links to material we feel is promising or useful in the support of
learning. We concentrate on business, but we won't be leaving out
other topics like personal development when and as we find really good
free stuff.

It's relatively new and we will be adding new stuff as often as we
can, but I'm fairly sure you should find something that interests you.
It's in a blog format, so you can rate and/or comment on the offerings
to help others, AND, in future, we'll be allowing visitors to add
their own favorite AND LEGITIMATE offers.

You can keep up with the offerings at the website at http://free2thee.com,
follow us on twitter (@free2thee or http://twitter.com/free2thee or
use the available rss feed. I want to stress: We are only including
real substantive offers, and not junk, spam, get rich quick stuff,
MLM, or those "free ebooks" that consist of five pages.

Check it out for yourself. I'm thinking you'll like it.

Changes at Both Our Training Related Site and Our Small Business Site

Essentially, what we are doing for both of these sites (http://
thetrainingworld.com and http://smallbusiness411.org ) is put our
development resources into the blog sections. There's still good
stuff, and articles, but all of our new articles, offers and materials
will be in the blog areas at:

http://thetrainingworld.com/wp/

http://smallbusiness411.org/wp

We've done this for several reasons. The first is to allow more
interaction, dialogue with and between our visitors through the
comment sections, and ultimately, to allow others to contribute
articles, while obtaining some free promotion and marketing "juice".
The second reason is ease of adding new material.

I think you will enjoy both of these blogs. You can keep up with any
new posts by visiting the websites, of course, by using the rss feeds,
or by following the associated twitter accounts:

http://twitter.com/trdev (that's for the training site)

http://twitter.com/smallbizIQ

You should also know that the title of the blog at our training site
has been changed from The Curmudgeonly Trainer, to The Happy
Curmudgeon to reflect a shift away from talking only about training
issues, and towards a general workplace topic blog.

A Newsletter Change:

SInce we're creating all kinds of new articles and resource links,
we'll be limiting our inclusion of complete articles in this
newsletter to shift towards providing some summaries of material we've
added, or we think has merits. We'll still include occasional articles
that might be of general interest, but that will be less frequent. We
are also going to start using "shortened" urls rather than long ones.
This is to ensure that the long links don't make it difficult for you
to access features. So, let's see what we have.

Featured This Issue:

How to Make Training and Development a Power Agent for Change

In this article, Jo Ann Kirby shares methods to get a decent return on
investment for training, and to use training and development to serve
required organizational change. It's not rocket science, but for those
making decisions about training (e.g. HR, Managers), it's useful. Long
link:

A Well Deserved Poke At Adult Learning Principles and Styles

Have at it trainers. In this article I provide a bit of a critique on
both adult learning principles and styles, two elements of "modern"
training that are essentially worthless to trainers and learners
because they don't add anything to actually help make learning more
efficient. Long Link:

Productivity, Excellence and Giftedness by Gregorio Billikopf,
University of California

This piece was originally posted on HRNET by Gregorio Billikopf of the
University of California. It has some excellent thoughts, but even
more important it's a great stimulus for thinking and discussion
around many HR, training, performance and learning issues. Gregorio
has kind given permission to reprint here on our blog. Also added in
the reply section is Robert Bacal's reply, also from HRNET. Long Link:

Free Whitepaper: The Pillars of Performance Management

This is a 20 page whitepaper that I quite like. It's rarely available
so if you want a copy, presuming you are interested in the topic, go
to http://free2thee.com . Info about how to get it is in the first
summary. But do it now. The offer will be withdrawn shortly.

Your Hamster Smarter Than You? I'm at it again, puncturing some of the
"wisdom" that is accepted as truth in the training field. Enjoy, and
be sure to read the comments made on the article.

Fastest Way to Make $10k Per Month - Recurring Revenue Model

Recurring affiliate income is the absolute best way to create a consistent income from nothing on the internet. Here are my reasons:

1) You market once and you get the income month after month;

2) As an affiliate you don't have to worry about all of the following:
a) Customer service
b) Fulfillment
c) Product creation
d) Updates the web sites
e) Merchant accounts - Just use a market place like Clickbank or Commission Junction
f) Charge backs - The product creator handles all the disputes
g) Service fees for shopping carts, merchant accounts, customer service, delivery

3) As an affiliate of recurring fees you can concentrate on finding traffic solutions that convert.

4) If you create an opt-in page to capture your traffic before the affiliate offer you can get several offers going at once.

5) You direct your opt in list to cost per action or cost per lead offers and you can make money without having to sell them anything. The networks pay for leads and provide free stuff.

6) You can literally get start creating recurring income in once day.

7) You can start without a list or a Website

There are several opportunities out there that you can sell and get a $50 recurring commission if you simply get 200 people to sign up out of all the people on the internet you would make $10,000 per month. Of course that is our magic number but as you can see it could me much higher then this.

These numbers are purely for people signing up to a recurring affiliate program and do not take into account the other things we mentioned like sending your list of buyers and opt-ins to different related affiliate offers and CPA networks.

Once you find the products and services that sell you can create your own products to make all of the money. You will not have to waste time developing something that won't sell you will know that it does.

Again you can literally start with no money and create a $10,000 per month income stream very quickly. Here are the steps:

1) Go to a market place like click banks and pick you recurring affiliate product.

2) Advertise it for free through article marketing, word press blogs, press releases, Yahoo Answers, and viral videos

3) Use Onlywire to link in your blogs and articles to social media sites.

4) Use Facebook and tell all your friends about this article so they know what to do to!

Once you are making money each month use 10% to invest in a pay per click campaign to increase your traffic.
