Is it About the Company or About You?

Business cards are a unique form of marketing in that they are more closely linked to whoever is handing them out. With certain exceptions like flyers, most advertising is going to reach the customer without any face to face meeting with you. They will see posters on the wall or pick up brochures out of a holder, and you are rarely going to be there when this happens.

Business cards are just as much a marketing tool as those other advertisements, but the kind of relationship you have with your business card printing is going to be considerably different. Sure, you can have business cards get passed around without you personally being involved, but this is not the norm, and this still does not change the relationship you share with your business card.

Because of this you have to consider certain things when making business cards that really would not matter with other marketing. The biggest question is whether or not your business card is going to be about you personally, or about your company as a whole. The emphasis will greatly change the type of business card printing you get done.

A card aimed at an individual person will naturally promote them more than the company itself. These are the kinds of cards that have a person’s picture on them, or maybe give a description of who that person is on the card. These are going to be color business cards that take on a more personal note. You will likely design them yourself or have a close hand in the design process if you want them to be closely linked to you.

Business cards connected more with a company will likely favor the company name over the person’s name. The company logo might be the more prominent thing on the color business card and what draws the eye the most. This might be your card and you might have paid for the business card printing, but people will clearly see that the company itself is the most important thing, and you serve that company.

A large distinction between the two is what name is in the center of the card. Is your name larger than anything else and centered in the card, the company name off to the top or bottom, or is the company name there?

Understanding the distinctions between these things can be very important to how your business card is looked at, and how people interact with you and your company. Make sure you are well aware of what format you are using and whether or not this is the right one for your particular situation. All you have to do is ask yourself what you want people to take away from your business card, and whether or not you want them to view you or your business as the most important thing to remember.
