News: What's Coming Up

We're always looking for ways to make it easier for you to access our books, recognizing that times are difficult. After all, if you are a writer, like I am, the really important part is that people can read and benefit, so we are looking at different ways to reduce customer costs. Here's what we're looking at: We are in the early planning stages of writing and releasing FREE books. I don't mean lame, fake books, but real free books that are also published in print, too. How is this possible? There's a newer model for book distribution called "ad-supported e-books" where readers pay nothing, but are shown some relevant, high quality ads within the book itself. Not intrusive or nasty, mind you, but just a few in each book. We're excited about the possibilities of this model, and we hope to have a number of NEW titles coming out over the next 3-4 months. Stay tuned.

Finally, we want to hear from you, because we're lonely, just sitting and writing, so we'll be looking at setting up an interactive "place" where you can ask questions, review our books and products, and talk about various topics we write about in depth. Work911 Ezine - Sept. 20, 2012 Tired of Frustrating Search Engine Results And More On Imperfect...

This time around we have news on a project, Nichesearch, which provides some tools to help you avoid the frustrations, terrible search results, and spam that currently exists when using Google, and Bing to find things. We also have an update on our free online version of Imperfect Phrases For Relationnships: 101 COMMON Things You Should Never Say To Someone Important To You... And What To Say Instead.

The Craziness of Search Engines, And A Possible Search Engine

You probably use Google Search most of time, as most do. And, you may have noticed that often the results you get take you to pages that are dead, or aren't really as represented in the search engine description. Or, worse, you click on a result, and end up on a page with flashing banners, popups, and so on. Sometimes you'll get multiple results that lead you to the same site or page.


We've revived a pet project I was working on several years ago, because it's become much more relevant as the results from the major search engines have gotten so terrible. It's called SearchNich.org, and what we are doing is developing "niche search tools" that, for the topics they cover, provide a much better search experience.

What's a Niche Search Tool?

When you use Google or Bing, the search engine draws from the billions of sites available, and tries to "read your mind" about what you are looking for. The general search engines do their best to match the results to what's in your head, but over time, as the Internet has exploded, the task has gotten much more difficult, and in a nutshell, that's why the results you get are so terrible. Their job is to index the entire web, and there's truly a lot of junk out there.

A niche search engine is different. It's task is to take ONE topic, and present to you a small subset of available results. While the general search engines "spider and classify the internet" via machine, our niche search engines index only what a real person decides is worthy. So, to build a niche engine, a PERSON hunts down the best sites and sources on a topic, eliminating spam, pages that are impossible to read, misleading results, and so on. The good stuff is added to the engine. The poor stuff is not.

The result is that you should see much better results.

Niche search engines have to be built by hand, so we've chosen topics for which we have great passion and interest, and eliminate the junk. It's a bit time-consuming, so we currently cover just the following topics, though we'll be adding more.

To be honest I'm NOT a fan of mobile technology. Perhaps it's an age thing but I think it's healthier to "disconnect" from technologies, so I prefer to limit my time online when I'm out of the office or out of the home. Well, sort of. That said, there's a fair amount of time that we all spend in lineups, waiting for someone or something that's "lost" time for most people, and waiting is pretty dull and boring. Mobile technology certainly takes away some of the boredom of waiting, and does allow maximizing your time, if that's a concern for you. And, you can LEARN on your mobile device, read a book, catch a video. I get it.
So, I commissioned the garden gnomes in the basement to bring us into the mobile world, and the result is two FREE APPS running on the Android operating system, which is likely what powers your smartphone or tablet if they don't have the name "APPLE" on the front.


This app was designed to those with an interest in customer service issues, particularly those that work in customer service, but we're adding features that will appeal to just plain old people. And it's looking good. And it's free. So, what's inside?

This free app is about relationships -- how to make them better, how to communicate more effectively. As our first attempt at an app, it lacks features, but not to worry...we'll be updating it, but get it now so you'll auto-update. It contains free chapters from our book, Imperfect Phrases For Relationships. Since we don't want to overwhelm you here, we suggest you check it out on the Google Play site, and download it to see if you like it. We promise we'll be doing some cool things with this app in the future, including adding audiobook segments, and...well, you'll have to grab it to find out. 


If I'm not a mobile computing guy, I'm certainly an audiobook junky, so it makes sense for us to look at making our books available in audio format. We're working on it, and we'll be using computer generated speech to keep costs down, so we can provide audio version at rock bottom prices. I know. I know. It's not a great solution for the ear, but our books are about learning and content, so we're going with it. Want to test it out and see how far computer generated speech has come?

If it's an important relationship, then you'll learn how to nurture it by saying the right things, rather than causing arguments by saying the wrong things.

Of course, simply eliminating ImPerfect phrases (those that have a negative effect on our relationships) isn't enough. You have to understand why they cause relationship problems, AND you have to know what else to say, instead. We have it covered. Each ImPerfect phrase includes an explanation, so you can learn general communication principles without having to do in depth reading about those "principles", PLUS examples of how to transform the imperfect phrase into one that build bridges, rather than causing arguments.

If you've noticed you haven't been receiving the work911 newsletter, it's because we were attempting to automate the process and make the newsletter more attractive. It didn't work, for a number of reasons, so we're back to the plain Jane look and content. We'll do better.

In early 2011, President Obama signed an executive order aimed at improving customer service in government. We decided to build a new website at http://customerservicegov.com to talk about the many issues tied in to the challenges of providing citizens like you and me with better customer service from government. There's some material focused on those working IN government, but we see it as a place where non-government people can discuss what they expect and want from government. There's a resources section, and our blog is an area where we'll post polls (see below), and questions that you'll probably be interested in, whether you are a government employee, or a citizen having to interact with government.
